Dermatology & Skin Cancer CenterThe concept of photodynamic therapy (PDT) is not new. Researchers have found evidence that 3,000 years ago Egyptians and Indians used plant extracts and sunlight to induce a change in the skin. But this technology has come a long way since ancient times.

Today PDT is extremely effective in treating acne, non-cancerous and pre-cancerous skin conditions, and low depth skin cancers. Other benefits of PDT include:
  • Non-invasive – There’s no cutting or stitching required. PDT’s selective cell destruction focuses only on the treatment area, with minimal damage to surrounding tissues and little or no scarring. Application is carefully targeted. Cancerous cells absorb the photosensitizing formula more readily, and retain more of the drug for a longer period of time, making them an ideal target for the light.
  • Minimal discomfort – Most patients have no pain during or after treatment. You may experience some skin dryness at the application sites, and we’ll ask you to avoid exposure to direct sun for a few days.
  • Non-toxic – Your body is not flooded with acne medication or toxic chemotherapy drugs. You’ll experience only a few hours of downtime following treatment, rather than days or weeks.
  • Convenience – Outpatient treatment is conducted at the Darst Dermatology office by a qualified healthcare professional. Treatment time is brief. There are no prescriptions to fill and no daily medications to remember.
  • Cost effective – While several sessions may be required, depending on the condition being treated, PDT is more economical than many other treatment options for acne and skin cancer.
Dr. Marc Darst and the team at Darst Dermatology are trained and experienced in the use of PDT. Therapy basically involves three steps. First, a photosensitizing agent (usually a topical cream or liquid compound) is applied precisely to the treatment area. The drug is permitted to incubate for a controlled period of time – from several minutes to several days. This incubation allows the treated cells to become very sensitive to light. Then, a special illuminator utilizing an exact wavelength activates the photosensitizer, destroying the underlying cells. You go home the same day and may return to work or school the following day.
