Latisse
Latisse®
Latisse® stimulates your body to grow longer, fuller eyelash hair. Many women are bothered by eyelashes that are too thin or sparse. Prior to the introduction of Latisse®, the only treatments available were eyelash extensions or mascara and eyeliner.
In a few weeks, your friends will notice that your lashes are longer, fuller and in some cases darker. The medication is applied using a sterile applicator brush to the upper eyelid along the base of the eyelashes. Apply the medication nightly until you are happy with the length and fullness of the lashes (typically 2-4 months). At that point, Latisse® need only be applied once or twice a week to maintain the results.
Latisse® comes in a kit with one bottle of medication and 30 sterile applicators. One kit should last at least one month and costs $120.
The chemical in Latisse® is also used as a treatment for glaucoma (Lumigan®). The amount of Latisse® used is much less than an eye patient would use and it is not instilled into the eye.
Side effects may occur in up to 4% of patients. They include redness and irritation of the eyelid at the site of application, eye irritation, and darkening of the skin along the base of the lashes. With Lumigan® instilled directly into the eye, a small percentage of patients experienced increased pigmentation of the iris (the colored portion of the eye), however in clinical trials for Latisse®, no increased pigmentation of the iris was seen. If you see any darkening of your iris while using Latisse®, contact Dr. Darst immediately.
