What Are Cysts?

Cysts are tiny, fluid-filled bumps visible on the surface of your skin. They can occur anywhere in your body and are usually white or clear. Cysts can be tender to the touch, and they may feel rigid. Some are filled with infection and may leak when manipulated. If this occurs, you risk spreading infection to other areas of your body.

If you discover a cyst on your body, don’t pick at it or use over-the-counter medications intended for wart removal to treat it. Instead, let Dr. Darst examine the cyst and recommend an appropriate course of action.

How Are Cysts Treated?

Dr. Darst will most likely drain the fluid from the cyst using a thin needle. This will dissolve the cyst, and it usually doesn’t return. If the cyst is made of hard tissue, it might need to be surgically removed using a local anesthetic. Dr. Darst can do this at his office, and you should be able to resume normal activities immediately after the procedure.

There are multiple treatment options that Dr. Darst can do. He may decide to observe it, and take no action. Or he can inject it with a steroid that will cause the inflammation to decrease. This may also help avoid surgery. The last option is incision and drainage (I & D). After thoroughly numbing the area, Dr. Darst would use a sharp, pointed scalpel to express the contents of the cyst. The wound may need to be packed with medicated gauze.
